Learn how to obtain a B2B or B2C gambling licence, from choosing the right jurisdiction to preparing all required documents. A practical guide for iGaming operators and suppliers.

No one talks about the paperwork when dreaming up the next big iGaming platform. But before the code, the marketing, and the partnerships — comes the licence. And getting one isn’t just a bureaucratic hurdle; it’s your entry ticket into legal, scalable, and investor-friendly operations.

Whether you’re supplying games to operators or launching your own casino brand, B2B and B2C licences are what separate you from the grey market. Here’s how to tackle them like a pro — from jurisdiction strategy to your stack of required documents.

B2B or B2C: what’s your play?

B2B licences are for suppliers — game developers, platform tech providers, aggregators.
B2C licences are for operators — casinos, sportsbooks, and anyone dealing directly with players.

The licence you apply for depends on your business model and target markets. Get this part wrong, and you’re setting yourself up for compliance headaches (or worse) down the line.

Think strategy when picking a jurisdiction

Every regulated market has its own rules. Choosing your jurisdiction is about more than finding a tax-friendly country. It’s about reputation, flexibility, cost, and long-term scalability.

Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

UK (UKGC): Rigid but respected. High trust, high expectations.
Malta (MGA): Versatile and EU-recognised. Favourable for both B2B and B2C.
Curacao: Quick and affordable, but may limit expansion to strict markets.
Isle of Man / Gibraltar: Premium-tier licensing with strong global reputation.

Your paperwork arsenal: required documents 101

Let’s not sugar-coat it. The required documents list is long, and the scrutiny is real:

-Director and shareholder IDs + police records
-A full business plan and financial projections
-Proof of funds and origin of capital
-Game certifications and platform architecture
-AML, KYC, and player protection frameworks

Some jurisdictions ask for more. Others ask differently. But they all want proof that you’re legit.

Expect the wait — and be ready to respond

Licence approvals can take anywhere from 4 weeks to 6 months. During this time, expect background checks, follow-up requests, and clarifications on your tech stack or ownership structure.

Speed depends on how clean, clear, and complete your application is — and how responsive you are during the process.

If you’re serious about entering the regulated iGaming space, don’t treat licensing like a formality. It’s your foundation. Choose the right jurisdiction, prep your required documents, and make sure you’re compliance-ready before you even think about your first user.
